Assessments

General Learning Assessments, Access Arrangements, DSA

Assessments

  • Assessments and consultations requested by parents are undertaken at my home office but I feel that the most effective interventions are those where the schools is fully involved in the assessment and intervention planning. Assessment can also be carried out on the school premises if appropriate.
  • Cognitive and attainment based assessment are followed by a report, but more popular now is the assessment without the long written report, culminating instead in brief written feedback on the findings from the assessment, a planning meeting at the school where detailed interventions can be agreed between the school, parents and young person involved. This also helps to keep the cost down slightly as there is less time spent writing a report.
  • I incorporate a wider focus on the young person’s strengths and passions in order to support their wider self-concept, actual learning skills and multiple intelligences.
  • I give some immediate feedback after the assessment with a positive emphasis so that the child/young person will leave feeling a sense of hope and more aware of their strengths.

Access Arrangements

  • Some young people with specific learning difficulties or slow processing speed require additional arrangements prior to exams. This may include the use of a laptop or 25% additional time or in more severe cases, the use of a scribe or a reader. The school/college would normally have encouraged these alternative means of working and an assessment can help to determine what arrangements may be appropriate for the young person. This is carried out with the full involvement of the school/college as they will need to prepare the forms required.
  • If the student is continuing on to Higher Education, assessment material for the Post 16 group should be used and if a full diagnostic assessment is undertaken, it will then be valid for Higher Education as well, so providing the student is at least 16 years old, no further assessment should be needed.

Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) Assessment

We are able to carry out a full diagnostic assessment with report that meets the standard for a DSA application.

As long as the student is above 16 years the report will be eligible.
